The six-lane I-126 bridge is one of the biggest traffic accumulators in Columbia, SC, carrying 50,000 vehicles a day. RKA completed capacity analysis and Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) traffic analyses for the proposed I-126 bridge replacement over the SCL Railroad in Columbia, South Carolina. Four MOT alternatives were considered for existing traffic detours during construction. It was determined that the MOT alternatives allowing multiple lanes of traffic in either direction across the bridge during construction were the least impactful in overall network delay, total VHT, and vehicle speeds within the study area. This information was paired with estimated construction costs to allow the Client to perform a cost/benefit analysis across the options. As a result, the City of Columbia has better insight on how to reduce traffic in a rapidly growing city.
