Let’s talk

    Project Overview

    SUMMARY:
The Design/Build project consists of the widening a stretch of I-440, including intersections/interchanges, a railroad grade separation, and a design noise report.

    Challenge:

As a fast-paced Design/Build project, consistent coordination was required with the contractor/design firm during the preparation of multiple temporary signal designs to meet maintenance of traffic needs. Preparation of the design noise report required modeling 1,882 noise sensitive receptors and conducting noise barrier analyses at 13 locations.

    Solution:

RKA streamlined a process for the development of the temporary signal design plans and cabinet testing based on the priority of implementation. RKA also determined that noise walls met NCDOT noise policy requirements at nine locations.

    Community Benefit:

The widening of I-440 and associated interchange improvements between will provide significant operational improvements for a key roadway network within the City of Raleigh. The nine noise walls will provide traffic noise reduction benefits to the equivalent of 562 single-family homes.

    Our Role:

RKA prepared 18 final & 47 temporary traffic signal designs; fiber optic cable routing plans & splice details; and the design noise report with drawings and balloting figures.

    Services Provided:

Traffic signal and communication design plans, design noise report.
